Travel journal

What can cheer you up after a period full of exams and stress? Of course a little and welcome journey :). Obviously, it came the big question: „where?”. After we took into consideration many variants he had the answer: Maneciu, Prahova county. Then it was a day searching information about the place, maps, photos and so on.

The big day came. 🙂 Our train leaves at 7.01 from the North station, so we should woke up at almost six o’ clock to be on time. We were a little bit in late because of me 😀 (tehnical sleeping problems) 🙂  and we needed to change the plan and to take another train that leaves at half past seven. It was a very confortable accelerat train that in 45 minutes was in West Ploiesti station.

The full ticket price was 10 lei. In 10 minutes we must catch the other train from the station South Ploiesti. We took a taxi and with 5 lei, in 5 minutes, we were there. We bought tickets – 5.7 lei it was the full price – and in other two minutes we was in the personal train running to Maneciu. In almost 2 hours we entered the little station called „Maneciu Ungureni”.

After taking some photos at the station we went inside the township. We stopped in the back of the station to have a fresh beer at the comunal inn: a simple place, with simple people, with a great cheap beer called „Ciucas”, only 2 lei. The beer was finished, the „one-piece” cigarette was smoked and we took the road to the dam. We ask some people how to arrive, they was kind and explained us with details the way that we should follow.

In almost 30 minutes we were riding the dam, having in the right part a beautiful landscape with the lake sourounded by the mountains. We had a walk around the lake on mountain roads, taking photos and enjoying that fresh air and wonderful outlook. It was a trailer near the lake arranged as a small house, it must be quite nice to life in a place like that.

We were staying on the bank of the lake dreaming how beautiful would be to move there after years. But the time flies fastly and when we consulted the clock it was around 15.30. In almost an hour we had the train to Ploiesti. Walking to the station we asked people about a place to stay during the night, because we want to go back to stay some days to explore better the zone.

Again in the train. Half of time we slept. We arrived in South Ploiesti and find a train to went back to Bucharest cheaper then it was in the morning, a personal train with 5.7 lei ticket. After one hour and a half we was back in the capital taking the subway. The single thing we wanted was a warm bed. 🙂

Buşteni is a small mountain town in the north of the county Prahova, in the center of Romania. It is located in the Prahova Valley, at the bottom of the Bucegi mountains, that have a maximum altitude of 2505 m.

Its name literally means tree-logs in Romanian.

Buşteni’s average altitude is 900 m. It is one of the most popular mountain resorts, offering spectacular views, with lots of year-round tourism opportunities, ranging from skiing to mountain climbing.

The town and the surrounding mountains were the site of military confrontations in 1916, during World War I.

A large commemorative monument (about 25 m high), Heroes’ Cross (Crucea Eroilor) lies atop nearby Caraiman Peak, at nearly 2,260 m. The monument is lighted at night and is visible from virtually everywhere in Buşteni.

The average population is 15,000 inhabitants, although numbers vary greatly because of tourism. The main local industries are wood industry and tourism. Many holiday houses have been recently built in the town.

Also a new Information Tourism Center was set up near the City Hall.

Slănic Prahova (România)

Location of Slănic Prahova

Location of Slănic Prahova

Slănic is one of the 14 towns of Prahova County, Romania, historically and currently known as a salt extraction center, as well as a spa town, with salt lakes.

The town is famous for its salt lakes (or Băi): The Shepherd’s (Baia Baciului), The Green (Baia Verde) and The Red (Baia Roşie) Lakes, as well as for the Old (Salina Veche) and New (Salina Nouă) Salt Mines.

While salt is still being extracted from the New Salt Mine, the Old Mine is open to the public now, being used as a spa, amusement center and museum of the salt mining industry.

International contests of Indoor Model Aircraft Flying (Modellism) take place annually in the upper level (Mina Mihai) of the Old Mine.

Other worthwhile tourist objectives, all within easy reach for any untrained hiker, are a local water spring named The Cold Fountain (Fântâna Rece), the TV Relay Tower (Releu) beyond The Fir Forest (Pădurea de Brazi), Beacon’s Hill (Dealul cu Semn), The Salt Mountain (Muntele de Sare) with the legendary Bride’s Cave (Grota Miresei), now partially collapsed due to rain erosion, as well as The Green Rock (Piatra Verde) and The Colt’s Small Hill (Deluşorul Mânzului).

Salina Veche is an old salt mine, located in Slănic, Prahova County, Romania, just 100 km north of Bucharest.

The salt mine is closed for extraction purposes, but is open for visitors, featuring a microclimate with natural air-conditioning and constant temperature and atmospheric pressure throughout the year.

It is made up of two levels, named Unirea and Mihai.

The work for the opening of the Unirea salt mine started in 1938 and the exploitation of the salt from this mine was performed between 1943-1970.

The exploitation was done downward from the ceiling to the basis in successive slices of 2.2 meters with a horizontal cutting at the basis and vertically along the walls.

The de-rocking was made through shooting. The transportation of the resulting material was effected with the tubs up the shaft using a cage to the installation of preparation and expedition.

The mine is composed of 14 chambers with trapezoidal profiles, having a 10 m opening to the ceiling and 32 m to the ground, a height of 54 m and a wall inclination angle of 60 degrees.

The shore difference between the surface and the base of the mine is of 208 m and it is covered by the elevator in 90 seconds. The excavated space occupies a volume of 2.9 millions m³ and it is extended on a surface of 78,000 m².

After 1970, the mine becomes a touristic objective, offering exceptional natural conditions as a result of its microclimate rich in aerosols, which proved its well known efficiency in treating the respiratory diseases.

The air-conditioning of the mine is natural, with a constant temperature during the whole year of 12 °C, an atmospheric pressure of 730 mmHg and a humidity with an average of 10% lower than the surface average.
